Gardens of Peace (France, Belgium)
During the meeting in March, the jury spontaneously decided to hand out a “Special Award of the International Jury” to honour the “Gardens of Peace” and their important admonition and message.
“Gardens of Peace” is a unique landscape project on the emblematic sites of remembrance of the First World War. It is a creative journey in the colours of the nations that were at war and who now embrace the cause of peace in the contemporary world. The gardens trace avenues of reflection on a world that is marked by economic, political and ecological upheavals.
Since 2018, the centenary year marking the end of the First World War, 20 Gardens of Peace have been created in Hauts-de-France, in Belgium and in the Grand Est. In 2022 and 2023 new Gardens of Peace will be launched in France and near or within national necropolises. By 2024, a Path of Peace will emerge from the borders of Belgium to Alsace. Created with the support of local authorities and people, the gardens are spaces for rest and reflection, offering an alternative perspective on our future and on peace which is always in question.
