The town of Tecklenburg is favourably located on the A1 motorway between the towns of Osnabrück and Münster and on the A30 motorway from Hannover to Hengelo. Tourism is one of the town’s main areas of activity.

The attractive setting of the town at the foot of the Teutoburger Wald (Teutoburg Forest) led to its recognition as a “Luftkurort” (health resort with excellent air quality) in 1974 and its official grading as a “Kneippkurort” (resort for Kneipp health treatment) in 1999. The townscape is characterised by half-timbered buildings and the houses of the upper bourgeoisie of former years.

The “Freilichtspiele Tecklenburg” (Tecklenburg Open-Air Festival) is staged in the ruins of the 12th-century castle. Top-class productions of classic and modern musicals form the main artistic focus of this popular festival.

The Puppenmuseum (Doll Museum) in the historical half-timbered house dating from 1684 houses one of the most valuable collections of dolls in North Rhine-Westphalia.

At summer weekends, an old steam engine chugs along the Teutoburger Wald, which affords a sweeping view of the Münsterland plain.

The fact that the “saga route” (Sagenroute) for cyclists passes through the Tecklenburger Land (Tecklenburg Region) indicates that sagas and fairy tales play a large role in this traditional landscape.

The natural landscape around the Recker Moor is one of the tourist highlights of the area as are the atmospheric village centres of Hopsten and Ladbergen. Larger towns such as Ibbenbüren and Lengerich provide a change of scene and a chance for the visitor to do some shopping. Everything revolves around horses in Hörstel-Riesenbeck, while the focus of attention is on relaxation in the state-recognised health resorts of Lieben and Mettingen.

The town of Tecklenburg has been twinned with the French town of Chalonnes-sur-Loire in the département of Maine-et-Loire since 1982. The gardens and cultural landscape of this French region are presented on this website under the heading Pays de la Loire.
