A botanical encyclopaedia with plants from all over the world
‘Hortus Eystettensis’ is an impressive florilegium with 367 plates of plants from all over the world, grown in the garden of the prince-bishop Konrad von Gemmingen of Eichstätt. The painter bought for 100 guilders a hand coloured copy at the world famous Officina Plantiniana from his friend Balthasar Moretus who owned an other copy of the book. From the first edition of 1613, fewer than 10 hand coloured copies survived.
