The main purpose of Johannisberg Wetland Park is to cleanse polluted stormwater before it enters Lake Mälaren. Much of the water now flows through the park’s six ponds on its way to the lake. As well as purifying the water in the sedimentation ponds, the park serves as a recreational space with educational features. Three pillars support this concept by topia landskapsarkiteker: educational activities, places for exploration and relaxation, and the park’s clear design.
To create opportunities for educational activities and close encounters with water, birds, and other aquatic life, the park has been fitted with jetties, bridges, and platforms. The park’s plant species include long-grass meadows lined with fringe vegetation, plantations, and smaller groups of solitary plants — all of which are native species. Footpaths wind through this landscape, taking visitors on a journey of discovery. Aquatic plants have either established themselves spontaneously or been planted from other wetland parks. Conditions are created for biodiversity in an area that was dominated by one species.
The jury awards points for the clever combination of improved biodiversity and water purification alongside recreational and educational offerings, all presented in a very attractive and transferable design.
