The Promenades in Reims were established in the 18th century on the site of the city’s former moats. They formed a connection between the historic city centre and the surrounding suburbs. Over time, the Promenades expanded along a central axis marked by statues, monuments, and other landmarks.

However, in recent years, much of the area had been dominated by cars, prompting the city to wish to revitalise the area as a green and blue corridor. Led by Osty et Associés, this redevelopment focused on preserving the historic unity of the Promenades, which had endured thanks to its rich arboreal heritage of chestnut, maple and plane trees. By removing invasive parking and thinning the trees on one side while complementing the existing canopy on the other, the design breathed new life into the space. These interventions created a new atmosphere with a more playful and friendly feel. A key focus was the addition of undergrowth beneath the trees, creating an atmosphere reminiscent of a wooded forest.

The jury acknowledges the design that preserves the historic character by restoring the monuments and protecting the heritage trees, ensuring a space that honours its past while meeting the needs of the future.
