Raby Castle, built between 1367 and 1390, is surrounded by a 200-acre deer park and is open to the public. In 2021, a major two-year development programme began to restore and conserve the historic buildings in the park and gardens, which had been disused for decades. Called ‘The Rising’, this project will help the estate share its rich and varied history with a wider audience, support ongoing maintenance, and continue its vital conservation programme.
The 18th century walled garden has been redesigned by Luciano Giubbilei in collaboration with the owner, Lady Barnard. They have created a stunning five-acre space that incorporates the estate’s renowned yew hedges and the iconic Raby fig tree. They have retained the gardens’ distinctive spirit, with framed views and a sense of tranquillity.
Reclaimed materials from the estate have been reused throughout the development. A ground source heat network has been installed to provide 60% of the heating requirements.
The jury commended the combination of restoration and development of a disused part of the historic garden, as well as the convincing modern design of the walled garden and the measures implemented to increase the sustainability of the estate.
