The Tower of London Superbloom celebrated the Platinum Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Twenty million carefully selected seeds were sown in the Tower’s famous moat to create a vibrant sea of flowers that evolved continuously from June to September 2022. The flowers changed colour and pattern throughout the summer while the moat was open to the public. Several other installations were added to enhance the experience, including a large multi-lane slide, immersive gardens along the east moat, evening lighting and a soundscape, as well as a collection of bespoke glass artworks.
For Historic Royal Palaces, the initiator of the project, Superbloom also marked the start of an initiative for schools across the UK. These schools were provided with free seeds, and some also received teacher training, in-school art workshops, and a class celebration day at the Tower.
The jury was convinced that this careful blending of historic preservation with a new design by Grant Associates, stunning seed selection by Nigel Dunnett, and community involvement will ensure that this centuries-old site remains relevant and meaningful in the face of today’s challenges.
