Since the renovation and reopening of the historic synagogue in 2000, followed by the establishment of the Jewish Museum and Cafe Bergson in the house of the last Jewish resident, these green spaces have been essential in creating a safe and welcoming environment for both visitors and locals.
These spaces include the Great Synagogue Memorial Park and the community garden, contributing significantly to the organisation’s mission of providing hope, safety, resilience, and reflection in the vicinity of the former Auschwitz camps.
The gardens consist of three distinct areas: the Oshpitzin Magical Garden, the Community Garden outside Cafe Bergson, and the Great Synagogue Memorial Park.
Each garden is a testament to biodiversity and natural beauty, featuring a variety of vines, ivy, native trees (both old and young), and a plethora of spring flowers such as tulips, daffodils, and snowdrops. These gardens create a lush ‘urban jungle’ in the heart of Oswiecim’s old town, offering a sanctuary for numerous bird species and small animals.
To support the avian visitors, the people installed dozens of birdhouses, attracting species like swifts, blackbirds, robins, pigeons, starlings, woodpeckers, and various tits. The gardens also provide a habitat for hedgehogs and squirrels. The commitment to sustainability is evident in composting of organic waste and cultivation of vegetables and fruits within the garden spaces.
Visitors are welcome to enjoy this oasis of beauty and harmony and to join to experience the tranquility and natural splendor of the gardens, and witness firsthand the living embodiment of the institution’s mission.
