The main aim of the project, designed by New Visit Group, was to create a contemporary urban park and to rehabilitate its relationship with the castle, while respecting the natural potential of a significant part of the site. The design is based on two major interventions. To the south-west, the wider urban context brings to the park a distinctive communication axis of the promenade – in effect an ‘urban avenue’ linking the city centre with another part of the city beyond the river. To the south-east, one of the central squares is linked to the park by a new generous staircase with wide, comfortable steps.
The park has two levels, natural and cultural: The urban park is an authentic architectural space for active relaxation, while the natural part – the aquatic biotope – is designed to make you a quiet observer. Water from the River Elbe will flow into the park via a new artificial stream. We invite the river into the park and it also becomes a source of irrigation water. The stream flows through the park and returns to the river. The northern stream is flanked by new natural meadows and native woodland.
The park’s network of paths is structured according to the dimensions and materials used. It is formed by milled paths; the material of the promenade is glazed concrete, softened by vegetation elements – the flowerbeds and new and existing grown trees in its body. This axis is accompanied by furniture – a steel pergola with a membrane roof and atypical benches that grow directly from the surface of the wooden pavements in the concrete promenade. They direct the view of the castle.
The promenade is accompanied by an active relaxation zone for children and adults. At the southern end, facing the city centre, there is a new two-storey park café.
