PODZÁMECKÝ PARK (PARDUBICE, CZECH REPUBLIC)
The main aim of the project was to transform the space, which serves as a park since the 1930s, into a contemporary urban park, to rehabilitate its relationship with the castle, while respecting the historical and natural character. Two layers – natural and cultural – intertwine: the intensive urban park is a space for active relaxation, while in the natural part – the water biotope – visitors become silent observers. A new stream brings water from the Elbe River into the park and to the north there are a new natural meadow and native trees.
In the southwest, the park’s new promenade is the “city avenue” linking the city centre with the Elbe riverfront. In the southeast, the park connects to one of the main city squares through a generous flight of stairs. In parallel to the promenade are nicely designed zones for active relaxation of children and adults. In the south end towards to the city centre, there is a new two-storey park café.
While most paths in the park are made by gravel, the materials of the promenade’s ground cover are smoothed concrete and wood. The promenade is a strict line but softened by sections of grass, by swinging beds of perennials and by islands of newly planted and existing trees. A steel pergola with a membrane roof shades some sections of the promenade. Benches “growing” directly out of the surface of the wooden walkway provide different seating levels.
