Wouldn’t it sometimes be nice to be a pig? At least, if one could be a pig on an “Archehof”. If you do not know what this means, you should visit the Büning farm. Since 1997, Maria Büning, supported by her mother-in-law and one helper, has bred and marketed traditional farm animal breeds in an appropriate environment.

It all started with a smallholding where the Bünings were self-sufficient. But as more and more friends wanted their meat products, it became a profession. The business started in 1990 as a nature farm and then developed into the “Archehof”.

So now you have coloured Bentheim pigs, Schwäbisch-Hällische pigs, Westfalian Totleger (they are not pigs but hens), Vorwerk hens, Pommern ducks, Cröllwetzer turkeys, Diepholzer geese and the Bavarian Landgans romping around the farm. The consumer who has tasted the meat of these animals, is grateful that these old breeds have not yet disappeared from the market because their taste is just unsurpassed.

The members of Slow Food know this because when they inspected the farm they had the opportunity to relish the food. But nobody has to wait that long: you can buy the produce at the weekly market in Münster on Wednesdays and Saturdays and at the organic farm market on Fridays. If you do not have the time then, you can make your purchases directly in the farm shop on Friday evenings.
